The first thought of a qualified motorcycle rider when he gets on his motorcycle and is ready to set off should be to ask himself, where are the helmet and gloves?
As the most basic configuration for motorcycle riding, a helmet is the core of safe riding.
Faced with a wide variety of motorcycle helmet products, how to choose a motorcycle helmet that suits you is a question that many beginner motorcycle riders are most concerned about. Below, I will talk to you in detail about how to choose a motorcycle helmet that suits you (hereinafter referred to as “helmet” or “helmet”).
1. Full-face helmet, half-face helmet or three-quarter helmet?
From the perspective of the area that the helmet covers the head, or from the perspective of the helmet type, helmets are mainly divided into three types: full helmet, half helmet, and three-quarter helmet.
A full-face helmet, as shown in the picture below, can wrap the head to the maximum extent, providing the most comprehensive protection in the event of an accident, so it has the highest safety factor.
The disadvantages are: it will be very hot to wear in the summer, especially when waiting for traffic lights (it is okay when riding because there is a wind duct);
Half helmet, as shown in the picture below, is also called “scoop helmet”, which only covers the upper head. It is easy to wear, not too hot in summer, and does not take up too much space in the motorcycle trunk.
The disadvantages are: 1. The head wrapping area is too small, and the cheeks and chin cannot be protected. The helmet is easy to fall off in the moment of falling, causing the helmet to be exposed, so the protection is very poor. 2. Goggles or lenses need to be purchased separately;
The three-quarter helmet, as shown in the figure below, is a transitional helmet type between the full helmet and the half helmet. We can say that this helmet combines the advantages of the other two helmets, or we can say that it combines the disadvantages of the other two helmets.
The characteristics of the three-quarter helmet are: 1. The safety is between the full-face helmet and the half-face helmet; 2. It is not too hot to wear in the summer, and it blows your chin in the winter;
In addition, there is another type of helmet that is worth mentioning: the open-face helmet.
The flip-up helmet has the length of both a full-face helmet and a three-quarter helmet. When the visor is buckled, the covered area is the same as that of a full-face helmet. When the weather is hot, the visor can be flipped up, which is very convenient. It is my personal favorite type of helmet.
The structure of a flip-up helmet is more complicated than that of an ordinary full-face helmet, and it needs to be very convenient to open and close, so the manufacturing process is more demanding. Under the same safety performance requirements, a flip-up helmet requires more processes to ensure. For example, how to ensure that the mask will not fall off during a collision is something that a flip-up helmet needs to consider more than a full-face helmet. Brands that are good at flip-up helmets include Italy’s Caberg and Germany’s Schuberth.
Summary: Among the above four types of helmets, in terms of safety, full-face helmet ≥ flip-up helmet > three-quarter helmet > half helmet.
